Progressive Web App (PWA) and iOS/iPhone/iPad

Apr 15, 2020

A Progressive Web Application (PWA) is a software application delivered through the web, built using web technologies. Since a progressive web app is a type of web page, there is no requirement for users to install it from an app store.

According to some of the hype in the web developer community, PWA’s are the future and will displace mobile applications. The truth, however, is up to Apple Inc., since they control the software in the majority of mobile phones in North America. Apple has not chosen to fully implement the PWA standard, and one reason for this may be that it is not in their best interest. For one thing, PWA’s would bypass their $50 billion dollar App Store. Key PWA features that are NOT available on iOS include:

  • Push Notifications - doubtless the most important feature of a communication app!
  • Background Update.

For that reason, we strongly recommend that organizations continue to plan on providing their community with a native iOS mobile app. A PWA is no substitute as it cannot be used to push information to the majority of your community.
